Chapelle St-Nicolas

Saverne (Haut-Barr Castle), Grand Est France

[Roman Catholic]

The Haut-Barr Castle (Hohbarr) was built high on a rock above Saverne. The castle was abandoned around 1770, though the chapel continued to be used until the French Revolution. The chapel, probably built during the 12th century, is the best preserved part of the castle. At one time a stairway connected the chapel and the rock agove, where there were apartments. The chapel, restored in the late 1800s, still hosts several Masses a year and has a large Nativity scene during the Christmas season.
