La-Chaize-le-Vicomte, Pays de la Loire France
Roman Catholic
The church was built from 1080-1099 when it was dedicated to Saint Nicolas. The church was part of a complex with castle and abbey. Protestants burned the church in 1568; the tower was added in 1757. The church is the best preserved, only part of a castle wall remains as the castle became used as a stone quarry. The abbey, from the 1100s, suffered the same fate, being burned several times during the wars of religion and sold as national property at the revolution. The land became a farm. There is now some restoration of the abbey and a small community of Benedictine monks live there.
