Serbian OrthodoxOriginally a parish church, it later became a women’s monastery. Legend tells that a girl was tending sheep during the Turkish rule. Turks wanting to plunder the monastery asked the girl where it was. She replied, “I do not know anything.” In response, they killed the girl. When she didn’t return, the villages come looking and found a bright tree, thought to be burning. However, it was found to be a halo coming down to the girl’s body. When taken back to the village, the oxen would go no further than the site of the former church. So this was taken as a sign that the girl was to be buried there and a church built over the tomb.
