Church of St. Nicholas the Miracle Worker Stolpy

Basmanny, Moscow City (Central) Russia

[Russian Orthodox]

Built in 1669, the church, one of the oldest stone churches in Moscow, was demolished in 1938. The name "Stolpy" derives from "stolp" refering to lookouts established at the time of the Tartar invasion. The church was on Armyansky Pereulok (also known as Nikolsky or Stolpov Pereulok). Some of the decorative elements were preserved and are incorporated into the walls of the Donskoy Monastery. It is now used by a teacher training college.
