Hauptkirche St. Nikolai

Hamburg Germany

[Evangelical Lutheran]

The church was the tallest building in the world from 1874-76. Allied bombs nearly destroyed it in July 1943. The steeple and rear wall are all that remain of the enormous church, once the principal church in Hamburg. The spire is still the second tallest building in Hamburg and one of the tallest church structures in Europe. The church is now a memorial to Hamburg’s wartime destruction and the victims of the Third Reich. Evocative sculpture is in the ruined nave and the crypt is a small museum.
