Chiesa S. Nicola

Palazzo Adriano, Sicily Italy

Byzantine (Greek Catholic)

The church was built in 1490 and is adjacent to the castle. It was built by Albanian refugees who came to Palazzo Adriano after the expulsion by the Turks. St. Nicholas is the patron saint of Palazzo Adriano. Originally it was known as S. Marco e S. Nicolò; though it has always been called only S. Nicolò. and there is no evidence of S. Marco. The first restoration was in 1606 and the last in 1958. Following World War II, the roof and windows were repaired and three new bells installed. It was rededicated to Saint Nicholas, the Most Holy ?Crucifix, and Saint Mark, in memory of it's ancient dedication. The 1968 earthquake severely damaged the church and it remained closed for a long time. Restoration began in 1998 and the church reopened in 2018.
