Chiesa di San Nicolao di Pietra Colice

Castiglione Chiavarese, Liguria Italy

[Roman Catholic]

The church and adjacent hospital were mentioned multiple times beginning in the 1700s, though the first record of a religious settlement here is from 1160. The church was built of non-local limestone. Archeological excavations have been ongoing since the 1950s. The church was in the form of a Latin cross with three semicircular apses. The Hospital of San Nicolao di Pietra Colice, south of the church, was built to accommodate pilgrims on their way to Rome. The comple, abandoned after 1760, is on Monte San Nicolao.
