Valle Piola, Abruzzo Italy
[Roman Catholic]
Valle Piola is an abandoned historic medieval village now in the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga. It was abandoned in 1977 as a result of the decline of sheep raising, though population had been declining since 1152. All that remains are 9 houses, the church, and ruins of a shepherds' shelter. Park authorities are interested in restoring the village.More information
