The church was established in the latter part of the 15th centukry. It was a small church outside city walls and gave its name to one of the ports. Thke church was renovated in 1966,including installing a marble floor. There used to be a rotating drum next to the entrance to receive abandoned babies. The church is often closed, due to theft, though access may be gained from the adjacent convent.
