The abbey was founded in AD 731 and disolved when Bavaria was secularized in 1803. The buildings were sold off and the abbey church, cloisters and lparish church were demolished. A monastery was re-established in 1918. In 1924 the Pope charged the Benedictines with making the Eastern theological and spiritual traditions known in the west. Ever since, there have been two groups of monks, one living and praying according to the Roman rite and the other according to the Byzantine rite. In 1986 both a St. Nicholas Church and a St. Nicholas Chapel were established for the Byzantine rite in the monastery's former brewery buildings. Arches were built to form the exonarthex.
