The church dates from the 12-13th centuries. It was significantly renovated in 1502 and again at the end of the 17th centukry and in the early 1700s. Restored again in the 1920s, the church was damaged in the 1934 earthquake. It was closed for several years and again following the 1962 earthquake. The church reopened in 1999. Originally dedicated to St. Maria di Piano e annessa di S. Nicola, the dedication was made to S. Nicholas in the 1600s.
