St. Nicolas Prytysko / Pritiska Church

Kyiv / Podil Ukraine

Ukrainian Orthodox

This white stone church with just one cupola is similar in design to Ukrainian wooden Orthodox cathedrals. It was built in 1631 on the site of a wooden church with the same name; a chapel was added in 1868.

A legend tells of a thief who crept into the church and, when leaving, an invisible force pressed him against the wall and didn't let him go. He was scared and cried for help. People gathered, he had to repent, and return items he was stealing. It is thought St. Nicholas was the one who prevented the man from wrong doing. Ever since this church is called "Prytysko", which means "pressed (against something)."
