Tverskoy, Moscow City (Central) Russia
[Russian Orthodox]
The church stood next to the Kutafia tower of the Moscow Kremlin. Originally built in 1470 and dedicated to St. Simeon, it was dismantled in 1493. Rebuilt in the 1500s the church was then dedicated to St. Nicholas. The name "in boots" comes from a silver icon of St Nicholas in silver "boots." The church was demolished in 1837 and bricks were used to build a new St Nicholas church in Manezh. Icons and other church furnishings were taken to the Holy Cross Monastery. The Manezh St Nicholas Church, consecrated in 1843, was closed in 1920 and destroyed in 1930. The site of the original church may be seen in the three arches of doors into the middle Alexander Garden.
