Church of St Nicholas Wet (Vodopoytsa)—Zaryadye

Tverskoy, Moscow City (Central) Russia

[Russian Orthodox]

The church was built on Mokrinsky Lane and first mentioned in 1468. It was rebuilt in 1695 and again in 1802. The name "wet" is thought to come from 1) the site standing on the pier in the 14th century; 2) constant moisture from rain and floods as in 1480 the area was swampland; or 3) the "Nikola Wet" icon showing St Nicholas saving the baby that fell into the Dnieper. The church was closed in 1932 and then used as a warehouse for theater props. It was demolished in the 1930s to make way for the high-rise People's Commissariat. It was never completed and a hotel was put on the site in the 1960s.
