The church, known as St Nicholas since the late 1700s, was earlier called St. Mary's. The earliest mention of a Hardwicke church was in 1092. The building dates from at least the early 13th century, with additions and restorations through the centuries. Major restorations took place in the 1840s, 1878, and the tower in 1927.
