, Moscow Oblast Russia

Russian Orthodox

Nikolsky-Uryupino was originally the estate of a manor house. The stone church was built in 1664-5. The bell tower was added in 1840; the rest of the church retains its original appearance. The manor was nationalized in 1918 and turned into a museum of country life. The church was closed in the 1930s and used as a granary, vegetable storehouse, and later for workshops. Resoration began in the 1960s and continued until 1989. The church was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1991. The manor house has been in litigation and fire gutted the interior in 2004. There are reports that the manor house may be restored and converted into a hotel.
