Frankfurt am Main Germany
Evangelical Lutheran
This late Gothic church on the Roemerberg (town hall square), was built in the 13th century and rebuilt as the city government's church in the 1400s. It was named for Hl. Nikolai, patron saint of seafarers, to protect the church from flooding by the Main River. Nicholaikirche and Paulskirche, 200 meters away, were badly bombed in 1944. After repairs, Paulskirche congregation has worshipped in Nikolaikirche since 1949. (Paulskirche was rebuilt as a national monument, used for national ceremonies).More information
