A wooden church was built on the site in the 1500s. From 1672-1703 the stone church was built. The church was enlarged in 1903-04 and a bell tower added the next year. The church capacity was 4000 people. 17 tons of gold and silver was seized from church ornaments, vessels and utensils. Services continued until 1936. The nave was rebuilt into a five-story apartment building. In 1945 the church was used for Soyuzmultfim, the largest animated film studio in the Soviet Union. The Community Church of St. Nicholas was registered in 1993. A chapel was set up in the building to the south of the church. Prayer services are held within the walls of the church on major holidays.
