The cemetery was opened in 1773; a church dedicated to St. George was built. A new church, St. Nicholas the patron saint of sailors and shipbuilders, was built in 1814. Many prominent shipbuilders from the Okhtinskaya shipyard are buried here. Five cemetery churches, but not St. Nichola,s were destroyed following in the years following the Revolution. St. Nicholas church is at the cemetery entrance. It was reconsecrated in 1870 following major repairs and painting. The bell tower was added in 1951 and a side chapel expanded in 1976. The church has never been closed.
