San Nicoletto della Lattuga—Little St. Nicholas of the Lettuce—Conventino di S. Nicoletto della Lattuga

Venice, Veneto Italy

[Roman Catholic]

The church was founded in 1332 by Nicolò Lion, after his illness was relieved by eating lettuce and medicinal herbs from the friars' garden. In gratitude he built the church and small monastery, named for his patron saint. The monastery cared for deserving seniors. It was expanded and restored over the centuries and contained many very fine works of art. The church was demolished in 1830, 23 years after Napoleon had closed "superfluous" churches.
