The ancient cathedral was destroyed in the 1783 earthquake that devastated the entire town. The next cathedral, finished about 1810 was destroyed in the earthquakes of 1905 and 1908. The new Romanesque cathedral was built on ruins of the old and consecrated in 1930. The church has three naves divided by columns. The marble statue has been in all three cathedrals, though it was abandoned in the rubble following the 1783 earthquake. Discovered in 1812, the statue was restored and installed once again.
