Chiesa di San Nicola dei Greci a Montedoro

Martina Franca, Apulia Italy

Greek Orthodox

The church dates from the 13th century when the town was founded. It has been modified over the centuries, especially during the 1600s. There is a small rosette above the entrance and a simple arched bell tower. It is noted for the 17th century frescoes. There are layers of frescoes and the painting behind the altar was extensively redone in 1802 that shows the Madonna and St Nicholas surrounded by saints. The property is endangered and the ancient frescoes are threatened by crumbling plaster and water infiltration. The church is closed without public access.
