The church dates from the late 12th century, though rebuilt on the foundations of earlier buildings from the late 1200s through the mid-1300s. Damaged in the Thirty Years' War, the towers collapsing by 1777. The church was deconsecrated in 1802 and used as a military garrison by the French. It has been the University Church for Georg-August-University since 1822. Rebuilt again at that time, it was last refurbished in the 1980s.
