St Nicolas Armenian Church—[St Nicolas Armenian Convent]
Armenian Apostolic (Oriental Orthodox)
The church was built in the 17th century.
When Napoleon came to Palestine in 1799, Palestinian soldiers surrendered as they expected to be disarmed and sent back home. Napoleon thought there were too many and had them brought to St. Nicolas Convent, where he was staying. Groups were brought to the shore and killed. This caused great resistance and Napoleon’s eventual retreat. He abandoned his wounded soldiers, who along with the monks who had cared for them, were also killed.
