The church was built from 1857 to 1862. It stood until the earthquake of 1933, leading to demolition in 1934. The marble altarpiece, Episcopal throne and tiles were saved. Permission to rebuild was finally granted and the church was rebuilt between 1937 and 1939. St. Nicholas was declared to be the patron of the island in 1935.
