Korpiselkä (Loimola), Republic of Karelia Russia
[Orthodox Church of Finland]
The church was completed in 1898 and, like the earlier 1789 building, was dedicated to St. Nicholas. The church was repaired in 1927 and 1931. The icons were from the Valaam monastery. In the 1940 Winter War the Soviet Union captured the eastern part of Korpiselkä, however, the entire village was ceded to the Soviet Union. The Soviets used the church as a kitchen. Finland recaptured the area during the Continuation War in 1941. The residents returned to their homes and repaired the church. The area was again evacuated when the area was annexed to the Soviet Union in 1944. The church icons and other furniture were removed and placed in other Orthodox churches and institutions. At first the church building was used for livestock. It is now abandoned and the dome tower collapsed in the first decade of the 21st century. The site is just two kilometers from the Finnish border.
