Portsmouth, Hampshire England UK

Church of England (Anglican)

The shipboard chapel was dedicated to St. Nicholas, patron saint of sailors and ships. HMS Neptune, built in Portsmouth, was the ninth ship to carry the name. Launched in 1933, she was a Leander-class light cruiser with the Royal Navy in World War II. Neptune's crew was primarily from the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy. She fought and was hit in the battle of Calabria, July 1940. In 1941 she was to intercept enemy convoys en route to Libya. The night of December 18, she was leading the convoy and struck two mines, then a third. Despite efforts of other destroyers, Neptune hit a fourth mine and capsized. Only 30 of her 767 seamen initially survived. However, just one was alive five days later when their lifeboat was picked up.
