Chapel of Our Lady and St Nicholas—HMS Hood

Portsmouth, Hampshire England UK

Church of England (Anglican)

The ship's chapel was dedicated to Our Lady and St Nicholas, the patron saint of seamen and ships. HMS Hood was built in Clydebank, Scotland. 1916-18. Commissioned in 1920, she was named for 18th century Admiral Samuel Hood. After serving in the Mediterranean Fleet, she was to be overhauled, but wasn't because World War II began. In 1941, ordered to intercept the German ship Bismarck, she engaged in the Battle of the Denmark Strait. Hood was struck by several shells and exploded. She sunk with 1418 men aboard; only three survived, rescued about two hours after the sinking. It was one of the great naval tragedies in the war.
