The ship's chapel was dedicated to St Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors and ships. HMS Nelson was built in Newcastle upon Tyne and commissioned in 1927, named for Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, victor at the Battle of Trafalgar. The Nelson served extensively in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Indian oceans during World War II. Decommissioned after the end of the war, she was scrapped in 1949.
