Katholikon of St. Nicholas—Monastery of Gregoriou

Mount Athos Greece

Greek Orthodox

The 14th century monastery, founded by Osios Gregorios, was dedicated to St. Nicholas. In time it became known by the name of its founder. For a time at the end of the 15th century the monastery was Serb. The monastery suffered from devastating fires in 1500 and 1762, as well as the depredations of pirates. Stephen the Great, Prince of Moldavia, greatly helped re-establishment after the fire of 1500 and is regarded as a second founder of the monastery.
