St. Nicholas Church

Belz Ukraine

Ukrainian Orthodox

Originally the Roman Catholic Church at the Castle, it was built in place of older buildings in 1926. Ukrainian sources have the Black Madonna (Our Lady of Czestochowa) brought to the castle in Belz by Lev I of Galicia and removed by Wladysław when the town became Polish. After Poles were displaced from 1951-1992 the church was not used. It was later transferred to the local Orthodox community.
