Church of Agios Nikolaos

Kastro, Skiathos Island Greece

Greek Orthodox

A fortress was built on an islet off the coast of Skiathos in 1207 to protect the capital from pirates. It wasn't effective and the capital was moved to Kastro, on a high rock, in the mid-14th century. In the 1830s Skiathos' capital was moved back to the original site and Kastro fell into ruin. Agios Nikolaos is one of two churches that have been saved. Services are held on December 6 and May 16. Old Kastro is a popular tourist site.
