Chapel of Agios Nikolaos

Ambelokipi Kastoria Greece

Greek Orthodox

The village climbs up the steep and inaccessible cliff=side of St Nicholas Mountain to celebrate the Translation of St Nicholas Relics on May 20. The small chapel is built into a cave on the cliff. Divine Liturgy is offered in the cave chapel. A festival is held at the foot of the mountain with music, food, and a place for pilgrims to sit.

The chapel was originally built by a monk in a more accessible place. After vandalism, it was transferred to the cave high above and access is only by a staircase with any steps. Construction is simple, such as used in cells on Metéora. The chapel again suffered damage by fire when many candles, lit to provide warmth, caught fire, burning the roof, icons, and more.
