St Nicolas Cave Shrine—St Nicolas Greek Orthodox Church

Beit Jala Palestine

Greek Orthodox

The cave where St. Nicholas is believed to have lived when he was in the Holy Land, is beneath the main church. Tradition teaches that St Nicolas stayed four years in this cave (over which the church was built) when he visited Bethlehem during his pilgrimage to the Holy Land, ca AD 330. The mosaic of the Imperial Byzantine Eagle was only ever used under Imperial sanction and indicates that this was a major ecclesiastical site during the Byzantine era.
