St. Nicholas Church

Baku Azerbaijan

[Russian Orthodox]

The church was built between 1850 and 1857, replacing a former mosque that had been turned into the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker Niro-Lycian. Before that the mosque had been used as a military warehouse. The building was small and uncomfortable and plans were made to build this stone church. Soviets demolished the church in 1930; only the lower part survived.
