Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker

Baku Azerbaijan

[Russian Orthodox]

The church was built between 1850 and 1857, replacing a former mosque that had been turned into the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker Niro-Lycian. Before that the mosque had been used as a military warehouse. The building was small and uncomfortable and plans were made to build this stone church. This new church was built in the Shemakkha Fortress. Soviets closed the cathedral in 1930 and the building demolished in the early 1930s. Only the lower part survived.
