Chapel of St Nicholas—Peterborough Cathedral Precincts

Peterborough, Northamptonshire England UK

[Roman Catholic]

The chapel was built over the great outer gate to the monastery precincts in the 12th century (1177-1194). Abbot Benedict built the gate and chapel, both dedicated to St. Nicholas. Over time the chapel fell into disuse and was then used as a music room. The gate, leading to Peterborough Cathedral Close, is located in the north-east corner of the Market Square, also known as Cathedral Square. The gate dates from Norman times, but has been altered. The Medieval wooden gate is thought to be the oldest working gate in England.
