The log chapel, under the patronage of St. Nicholas, was built in 1849 by Fr. Rehrl, "Apostle to the Holyland." The chapel was on the top of The Hill at Mount Calvary and the area was known as the "Holyland." It served German immigrant farmers. The parish was renamed Holy Cross in1853. The parish church moved to the base of the hill in 1970 and in 2010 the three area parishes (St. Cloud and St. Joseph, both in St. Cloud, and Holy Cross, Mt. Calvary) formed St. Isidore the Farmer Parish. Capuchin Franciscan friars have served these churches since 1857.
