The town was founded by immigrants from Luxembourg. The parish was founded in 1857 and a wooden frame church built in 1866 in what is now "Old St. Nicholas." A new, larger, church was built three miles south of the original church and the town center shifted to the new location. That building burned to the ground in 1914. The present church was then built and dedicated in 1915.
