St. Nicholas Chapel

Biorka, Sedanka Island, Alaska USA

[Orthodox Church in America (Russian)]

The chapel was consecrated in 1855. Following Japanese attacks on Unalaska and Kiska in 1942, residents were evacuated. Some returned in 1945, though a major storm in 1952 destroyed most of Biorka, including the church roof. This caused desertion of the town. In the mid-1960s the church building was dismantled and burned, with a small structure built to protect the original altar area. In 2010 former residents and their descendants visited and placed a large wooden memorial cross on the site. Many items from St. Nicholas were transferred to St. Seraphim of Sarov Church, Dillingham, Alaska, when that church was rebuilt after burning down. An icon of the Resurrection at the church in Unalaska may be from St. Nicholas, Biorka.
