The Church of Saint Nicolas was built in 1770 over ruins of Benedictine abbey. The altar of the Holy Mother of Carmel is on the same place as abbey’s sanctum. One of the most important objects is a cross called "Veliki Bouh", meaning “big god”. It is said that a long, long time ago there was a big storm, lasting a couple of days. After the storm settled, villagers found a cross on the shore. They took this cross into the church; later they wanted to take it out in procession. However they couldn’t do it: the cross was to big to get out through any of the windows and doors. It just didn’t want to leave. The island has lost nearly all its population
