The church was built in 1494, concluding in 1516, and was a fine example of 16th century architecture. It is adjacent to a community of Franciscan friars. The church, owned by the city of Carpi, was badly damaged in the earthquake in 2012 leaving the church in unsafe conditions, with damaged walls, pillars, and bell tower.
