Patrick Cardinal O'Boyle was delayed in South Laurel in 1967 and noted the rapid growth and need for a new church in the area. The parish was established that year and named for the Cardinal's titular church in Rome, San Nicola in Carcere (St. Nicholas in Prison or chains). Cardinal O'Boyle dedicated the building in 1971. Because the church has served as an ecumenical center, hosting Jewish and Protestant congregations, it is known as the Parish Community of St. Nicholas.
