Church of St Nicholas

Churchstoke, Shropshire (Montgomeryshire, Wales) England UK

Church of England (Anglican)

On the border between England and Wales, the parish is Welsh, but the church is in England.

The church is thought to have originally been an Augustinian chapel to Chirbury. The 13th century tower is a defensive style and the church served as a refuge during later feuds and battles. In 1646 Royalists took refuge in the church, the Parliamentarians set fire to the church door, forcing surrender. The building has been extensively altered and restored in the early 19th century, leaving only a few signs of musket shots and other earlier features. When rebulding was completed in 1881 the church was dedicated to St Nicholas, replacing St Mary.
