During the 7th century St Finnbarr stopped in Fowey on his pilgrimage to Rome. While there he built a little church, replacing an earlier one established by St Goran. A Norman church was built on the site in 1150. This church was rebuilt in 1328 and dedicated by the Bishop of Exeter to St Nicholas Bari in 1336. However, the new name didn't take and the church continued to be known as St Finnbarr. Architectural drawings for restoration in the 1870s identified the church as "St Nicholas, Fowey, Cornwall."
