The present church was probably built during the 12th century and consisted of what is now the nave. In the 1330s the chancel and chapel were added. The next century added the south porch and the timber bell turret. The turret is complex and is really two turrets, one inside the other, to provide support for the five bells. One of the rectors, Dr John Pell, who had been a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Amsterdam, proposed the division sign for math which is in use today.
