Church of St Nicholas

South Ferriby, Lincolnshire England UK

Church of England (Anglican)

A church has been on the site since Saxon times. The preent building contains earlier masonry and was built over springs that have undermined the walls and, at least twice in the 16th century, caused significant land to slide collapsing the west end of the nave. The shortened church was rebuilt in 1578 and the streams diverted further south. Realignment in 1889 added a new chancel on the south end, making it one of very few English churches with the altar facing south. It is one of five churches forming the Saxby (Plurality).
