Church of England (Anglican)
St Nicolas church is one of few remnants of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Mary at Abingdon. It was part of the final rebuilding of the abbey in the 12th century to serve lay officials, servants of the abbey, and visitors. So, it was by the gate, partly within and partly outside the precints. The Norman doorway in the west wall and the north wall of the nave were part of the original chapel. The tower was added later. The Stert stream flows under the nave. St Nicolas' became a parish in 1372.
