Bearwood was built as the country estate of John Walter III, who made his fortune as proprietor of the great Victorian newspaper, the Times. The Royal Merchant Navy School, serving children of those lost at sea, moved to the estate in 1921. In 1961 it became an independent school under the name, Bearwood College, and is now co-educational with boarding and day scholars.
