St. Nicholas Parish Church

Ardtole, Co. Down Northern Ireland UK

[Roman Catholic]

Just 2km north-east of Ardglass town, on the coast road to Dunsford, are the ruins of the ancient St Nicholas Church of Ardtole. The long narrow 15th century church has a large east window and north and south doors, one with a draw-bar hole. The church was abandoned in 15th century after the congregation was massacred to avenge an insult (Jonathan Swift used the story in Gulliver's Travels). The remaining congregation transferred to Ardglass church.
