The church began in 1190 as a chapel of the Benedictine priory of Blyth. The chapel was shorter and half as wide as the present church. Bawtry was a busy inland port with the wharf just below the church, making St Nicholas a natural patron. The tower fell in 1670 and was rebuilt in 1713.
